渋谷PARCOのPOP UPにて3/20限定でPLANT'S LETTERに植物イベントを開催してもらいます。
メキシコ、アメリカ南西部、カリブ海、中南米に自生しているアガベ。
270の異なる種の広がりが、テキサスの砂漠から西側のグランドキャニオン、カリフォルニアの海岸、さらには南メキシコからペルーにまで及んでいます。
アガベはその葉に水を保存して、乾燥した気候を生きのびます。
一稔性の植物として、数十年生きたあとで一度だけ、高くそびえる花を咲かせ、死に至ります。
そしてやがて、子株、球芽、種子というかたちで再生します。
国境を接している米国南西部とメキシコは、豊かな文化の歴史を共有しています。
ネイティブアメリカンには、アガベの一部を利用して、食料や薬、衣類の繊維やバスケットなど、生活に欠かせないたくさんの製品を生み出してきた歴史があります。
現代では、テキーラやメスカルを生産するための重要な作物となっています。
PLANT'S LETTERでは、現地から直輸入したアガベに加え、 陶芸家の閑野淳氏 @と姬野翔太氏による鉢をお届けいたします。
Agave are native to Mexico, Southwestern United States, Caribbean, Central and South America.
270 different species range from the Desert of Texas, West through the Grand Canyon, and to the Coast of California, all the way through Mexico south to Peru.
They are specifically adapted to store water in their leaves to survive in Arid environments.
Agaves are monocarpic, meaning they bloom only once after a few decades, erect a towering bloom, followed by death and regeneration in the form of offsets, bulbuls & seeds.
The Southwestern United States and Mexico share not just a border, but a rich cultural history. Native Americans have implemented parts of the agave plant historically to create many important products from food to medicine, to fiber for clothing, baskets and other products.
In modern times agave have become an important crop for production of Tequilas and Mescal.
